I wrote this shortly after watching the movie. My current opinion on this character is more or less the same, with some noticeable areas of concern – which I’ll address in a future post.
The Netflix movie My Little Pony: A New Generation released to great success, and with it came a cool cast of new characters – now in detailed 3D. Among them, one does stand out uniquely and has gained immense levels of endearing love from My Little Pony fans. Let’s get into a few reasons why this purple unicorn is so beloved.
Reason #1: She’s the Core Catalyst.
In times of bleakness, sadness, and depression, one often looks for a source of hope and optimism – that things will improve if said source is found and sought after. And that starts with having internal belief that such a source can be found, or will come to you. Izzy somehow finding Sunny’s childhood friendship invitation letter gave her that hope and belief of being able to find friendship with somepony.
Such a moment where a character reveals they were seeking friendship from others of a different type as you also hoped to as a child (and via your seemingly hapless effort) is beyond touching. Not to mention that such an effort also led others together with you as a group of friends, too.
Reason #2: She can Sense Your Sparkle.
We do sometimes find ourselves in a state of loneliness or low levels of happiness and optimism. It only stands to reason that we would love and gravitate towards somepony who can detect our mood and instinctively strives to empathize with us in a positive way to make us feel better. Whilst pandemonium rages on around her, Izzy tries to be friendly and playful to the townsfolk of Maretime Bay. While the line “Is everypony playing hide and seek? I see you!” might seem a little childish, it exudes a sense of friendliness and connection.
Reason #3: She Yearns for Friendship.
It is only natural to love somebody who longs to have a friend. Izzy clearly displays this as she exudes joy and happiness at finally being able to share her creative artistic works with others who love and appreciate it. And a little pout at having such a moment interrupted by a reminder to stay mission-minded is just the sweet icing on the feels cake.
Reason #4: She’s Just Cute and Adorable.
This is an absolute no-brainer. Let’s face it – a pony with a long, semi-curly mane and tail, a high-pitched childlike voice, and chubby cheeks holds unparalleled levels of power to win hearts, regardless of age or gender. It’s no coincidence that purple as a color is often associated with mystery, magic, and compassion. Her willingness to befriend others and bring excitement and joy to an otherwise gloomy or tense situation is warming, despite her initial obliviousness in some situations. Izzy is one pony whose physical appearance and personality nurtures feelings of love, care, empathy, and affection.
